MUNICH (Germany) - With European club basketball about to take a break with national cups and the upcoming national team window for the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers, it's a good time to take stock of which teams are currently leading their domestic competitions across the continent.
A number of teams are undefeated in their leagues including Beselidhja (Albania), Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Fribourg Olympic (Switzerland) and Dnipro (Ukraine) while Bakken Bears (Denmark), BC Kalev/Cramo (Latvia/Estonia), Panathinaikos Athens (Greece), Falco Szombathely (Hungary), Belfast (Ireland), Sutjeska (Montenegro) and Heroes Den Bosch (Netherlands) all have just one defeat thus far.
Perhaps the biggest surprise league leader thus far is Germani Brescia in Italy though the club did win the Italian Cup last year. Brescia, who have never finished a regular season higher than third place, are currently holding off Virtus Bologna and Olimpia Milano atop the Lega A.
The common link among all the league leaders in major domestic championships is that all of them will have be represented in the FIBA Continental Cup 2025 Qualifiers, with no less than 10 players from Real Madrid, eight from Panathinaikos Athens, five from Zalgiris Kaunas named on the national team preliminary squads.
Note: The records of current championship leaders are accurate as of February 14 with a few of the leagues still having games over the rest of the week.
