MUNICH (Germany) - Eight national federations have submitted official bids to host FIBA EuroBasket 2029, with the field of candidates including no fewer than six former hosts and five former champions.
Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain are, in alphabetical order, the countries that have submitted their respective bids to host Europe's flagship basketball competition in 2029.
Four of those eight candidates will be announced as co-hosts of the 43rd edition of FIBA EuroBasket at the conclusion of a rigorous selection process, in line with the multi-host concept that was successfully introduced for the 2015 event and has been in place ever since.
Estonia and the Netherlands are the only countries on this list to have never played host to the Final Phase of a EuroBasket tournament, while Finland aspires to become the first ever back-to-back EuroBasket host as it's also one of the four nations that provide the stage for the upcoming edition, in September 2025.
Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Slovenia and Spain are not only former EuroBasket champions but are also considered traditional powerhouses of European hoops. The first two in particular have experienced the unique thrill of conquering a EuroBasket title in front of their home crowd, in 1993 and 1987, respectively.
"The fact we have received eight official bids to host EuroBasket 2029 is a testament to the enormous reach of Europe's showpiece event. Our national federations have embraced the now well-established multi-hosting format not only as an engine of huge growth for the competition in itself, but also as a driver of development for our sport in every corner of the continent," FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak said.
The selection process will commence with FIBA Europe evaluating in detail all eight bids and the final decision on the four hosts will be announced in May 2025.
FIBA EuroBasket 2025, poised to be next year's reference basketball event, will tip off on August 27, 2025 in Cyprus, Finland, Poland and Latvia, with the champions set to be crowned in the Latvian capital, Riga, on September 14, 2025.
FIBA Europe announced last week the Group Phase hosts of FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 with Belgium and Sweden officially joining Finland and Lithuania as organizers of the 41st edition of the event.
