ISTANBUL (Türkiye) - The trophies continue to stack up for Fenerbahce Opet after they claimed back-to-back SuperCup Women titles having only won the competition for the first time last year. The holders and reigning EuroLeague Women champions had to work harder than the final score suggests to see off city rivals Besiktas JK 79-63 in Istanbul as they came out on top in the 2024 edition. Fenerbahce were led by new signing Gabby Williams who produced a trademark all-action effort and finished the contest as MVP after contributing 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
The result was hanging in the balance after Besiktas produced an excellent first-half performance to unexpectedly hold a 37-33 lead at the break, with Elif Bayram particularly impressive during the first 20 minutes. However, Fenerbahce stepped on the gas in the third-quarter and with influential Besiktas debutante Nika Muhl leaving the court with an injury, they seized the opportunity to take control. As well as Williams impressing, there was also a strong display from Emma Meesseman who registered 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while Turkish guard Sevgi Uzun had an eye-catching 15 points.
Khaalia Hillsman led the way in defeat for Besiktas with a super double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fenerbahce become only the third club in history to be crowned SuperCup Women champions more than once, joining former winners UMMC Ekaterinburg (2013, 2016, 2018, 2019) and Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje (2009, 2010) in completing the feat.
Five other clubs have all won SuperCup Women once and they are Perfumerias Avenida (2011), ZVVZ USK Praha (2015), Dynamo Kursk (2017), Valencia (2021) and Tango Bourges Basket (2022). ###
