BANGKOK (Thailand) - Colombia are celebrating a famous night in Bangkok as they collected a landmark maiden victory at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup.

To make their historic result even sweeter, the debutantes managed to get off the mark by beating last year's FIBA U18 Women's European Championship winners Germany.

It was Mayra Caicedo who starred in a fantastic 67-60 triumph as she showed out with 19 points, 5 steals, 4 assists and 3 boards. Even more impressively, Colombia came back from a nightmare first ever appearance on Day 1 when they were crushed by Spain.

"I can't even speak or explain this feeling," said a jubilant Caicedo after the buzzer.

"My emotions are all over because we have showed that we have arrived again on the basketball world stage and have beaten a good team.

"We are Colombia and we are proud. We never stopped believing and we sent a message after we also played in Minsk last year at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup that we are moving up.

"Now we will enjoy it and hope there is more to come," she added.
