Mexico's Olivia Carrillo to perform Draw of the U17 Women's Basketball World Cup on April 11

MIES (Switzerland) - The Draw for the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024 will be held on April 11, starting at 11.00 (local) and 19.00 (CET) in Leon, Mexico.

The competition will be held from July 13-21 in Leon and Irapuato , Mexico.

Draw Principles

The participating teams of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024 have been distributed in four pots created to reflect the strength of the continents regarding the current FIBA World Ranking Girls, presented by Nike and the results of the previous FIBA U16 Women's Continental Cup. The pots are as follows:

POT 1: Mexico, USA, France, Spain
POT 2: Canada, Australia, Japan, Italy
POT 3: Finland, Mali, Croatia, Egypt
POT 4: Argentina, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Chinese Taipei

By the draw, the teams from each pot will be distributed in four groups, and at the same time, they will be assigned the competition numbers.

Teams from Africa and Asia/Oceania will not be drawn into the same group. There will be at least one but no more than 2 teams from Europe and the Americas in the same group.

The Host Mexico will play the Group Phase in Leon and will be drawn in Group A or B. Defending champions USA will play the Group Phase in Irapuato and will be drawn in Group C or D.

Carol Callan, FIBA Central Board member, Modesto Robledo, Mexican National Federation President and Christian Enriquez, General Director Sports Commission of the State of Guanajuato, will attend the event and watch former Mexican National Team player Olivia Carrillo perform the draw with the help of Mexican National Team player Viridiana Mazzocco.

Olivia Carrillo represented her country for many years at the highest level, standing on many podiums and establishing herself as a true legend of her national team. The pinnacle of her career is arguably when she won the Women's CentroBasket 1991, played at home in the city of Monterrey, Mexico. She also brought her extensive experience to coaching, leading the Mexican team at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2016 in Spain.

Viridiana Mazzocco was born and raised in Guanajuato State and played for the Mexican Youth National Teams during three summers from 2012-2014. Her career culminated at the FIBA U17 Women's World Cup 2014 in the Czech Republic.

FIBA
