ZARAGOZA (2016 FIBA U17 World Championship) - Debutants Turkey shocked Canada to reach the Semi-Finals of the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship and were joined in the Final Four by hosts Spain, reigning champions United States, and Lithuania.
Turkey reached the Semis of their first U17 Worlds by beating title contenders Canada 80-74. Turkey got double-doubles from Ragip Berke Atar (28 points and 15 rebounds) and Ahmet Can Duran (14 and 14) and out-rebounded the Canadians 67-40. RJ Barrett poured in 33 points and Danilo Djurcic had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Canadians.
Next up for Turkey will be hosts Spain, who held off Australia 74-63 thanks to 26 points and 9 rebounds from Sergi Martinez. The Australians, who reached the Final the past two editions, got 16 points from Tom Fullarton, while Sam Froling collected 12 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. The Australians will face Canada in the Classification 5-8.
The USA rolled into the Semi-Finals with a dominant 133-81 victory over Korea with seven Americans scoring in double figures. Collin Sexton led the way with 24 points to go with six assists and five rebounds while Kevin Knox II scored 17 points and Carte'Are Gordon had 16 in the win. Yang Jae Min paced the Koreans with 14 points.
The Americans' opponents in the Semis will be Lithuanians, who battled to a thrilling 73-72 win over France in overtime. Arnas Velicka collected 23 points, five assists and four rebounds while Ignas Sargiunas scored 16 points in the win. France, who came back from a 15-point deficit and led the game for a time, got 21 points and eight rebounds from Jaylen Hoard while Ivan Fevrier added 13 points in the loss. The French will play Korea in the Classification 5-8.
Meanwhile, last summer's U16 European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina will play for 9th place as they beat Dominican Republic 96-73. Dzanan Musa scored 34 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Aljosa Jankovic registered the first triple-double in U17 Worlds history with 15 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists while also getting 5 steals. Bosnia and Herzegovina will play China, who rolled past Finland 77-57 thanks to 21 points from Wang Yibo. The Finns, who got 11 points from Miika Heinonen, will play Dominican Republic with one of the first-timers to finish 11th.
Lin Ting Chien had 20 points as Chinese Taipei picked up their first victory at the U17 Worlds, beating Mali 77-61 in the Classification 13-16. The Asians moved into the 13th place game where they will face Argentina, who out-lasted Egypt 76-73 in triple-overtime. Lautaro Lopez scored 20 points for Argentina while Ahmed Khalaf collected 20 points, 22 rebounds and 5 blocks in the first-ever triple overtime game in the tournament’s history. Egypt will face Mali for 15th place.
