FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2021 Division A: The Teams

AMMAN (Jordan) - FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2019 Division A saw Japan claim their fourth straight title, building up momentum for a run to a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Japan will be back in action along with the best teams in the region  for the 2021 edition of the Women’s Asia Cup in Amman, Jordan which will be held from September 27 to October 3.

The teams that will be competing are Japan, Australia, China, Korea, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, Philippines and India.

Japan won their fourth consecutive Women’s Asia Cup over China in an exciting title game, 71-68. Australia also claimed 3^rd place in a win over Korea.

All teams will be returning from Women’s Asia Cup 2019 Division A as Division B was not staged in 2019.

Women’s Asia Cup 2021 Division B will be played between 7-13 November 2021 also in Amman, Jordan.

Japan, China, Australia and Korea recently participated in the Tokyo Olympics and showcased their talents to the world. Japan made a historic-run all the way to the gold medal game, ending up with the country's first medal in Olympics basketball. China and Australia both made it to the Quarter-Finals, marking the first-time ever that three teams from the Women's Asia Cup all advanced to that stage. Though Korea weren't able to make their way past the Group Phase, they put up valiant efforts against powerhouses like Spain and Serbia.

Chinese Taipei will be looking to put the 2019 disappointment behind and perform better in Amman

India

India finished 8th at home in 2019, something that will try to avoid this time

Aside from being the premier competition for women's basketball in the region, the FIBA Women's Asia Cup is an important part of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 qualification.

The final standings of Women's Asia Cup 2021 (including Women's World Cup hosts Australia) will determine the identity of the teams playing in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournaments which will be held in February 2022.

The tournaments will feature four national teams each, with the top three from each qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2022 to complete the 12-team field for the main event.
