    Kamilla Soares honored as MVP, leads All-Star Five at Women's AmeriCup

    LEON (Mexico) – There was twice as much to celebrate for Brazil center Kamilla Soares Cardoso after being named MVP of the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup to headline the All-Star Five.

    LEON (Mexico) – There was twice as much to celebrate for Brazil center Kamilla Soares Cardoso after being named MVP of the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup to headline the All-Star Five at Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

    Soares was undeniable in the paint for Brazil on both sides of the ball and was the biggest contributor in their comeback win over defending champion USA, winning 69-58 in the Final picking up a record sixth Women’s AmeriCup title. On top of scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds and 3 steals in the Final, she averaged 10.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.1 steals per outing throughout the competition. 

    Soares was joined in the All-Star Five by Brazil teammate Damiris Dantas, who was named to the All-Star Five in the 2019 edition of the Women’s AmeriCup in which Brazil won a bronze medal. Adding 11 points in the gold medal win, she averaged 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

    Rickea Jackson helped USA take home the silver as she led her team in scoring and tallied a double-digit score line in every single game of the Women’s AmeriCup. She averaged 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds and scored 102 total points in the competition.

    After settling for fourth in the 2021 edition of the Women’s AmeriCup, Kayla Alexander was essential to Canada taking bronze this time around. She led Canada in rebounds and trailed only Nirra Fields in scoring, averaging a double-double of 11 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per outing during the competition.

    The last spot in the All-Star five was given to Puerto Rico's Arella Guirantes, who played a leading role not just for her team but led the competition in scoring for teams who played 7 games. The shooting guard led her team in points and assists, finishing the tournament with 20.4 points. 6.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.
