LEON (Mexico) – Canada put up another strong performance to stay undefeated taking a win 89-55 against Colombia on Tuesday evening at the 2023 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup at Domo de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Nirra Fields, who has been strong for Canada in their first two showings, jumped out offensively netting 10 points in the first quarter as Canada shot 57 percent as a team with Kayla Alexander adding 5 points to lead Colombia 22-14.

Jenifer Muñoz continued to be a standout for Colombia tipping in 5 points in the quarter, but the team shot just 26 percent from the floor on top of allowing Canada to dominate in the paint resulting in an 8-point gap.

Syla Swords made an impact for Canada in the quarter scoring 8 points in 7 minutes of play while Aislinn Konig added 6 points from beyond the 3-point arc and Aaliyah Edwards had another half of doing it all including scoring, playmaking and rebounding.

Esperanza Delgado had a breakout quarter for Colombia scoring 12 points including going 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the half, but with Colombia’s rotation unable to keep up Canada led 47-33 going into the break.

In their best defensive quarter of the game, Canada held Colombia to just 9 points as Fields and Alexander continued to play aggressive on both sides of the ball with Alexander once again dominating on the defensive boards and grabbing 10 total rebounds by the end of the third.

Once the fourth quarter began Delgado and Muñoz continued to fight for Colombia to stay in the game, but steady defense from Canadians like Cassandre Prosper kept Canada ahead using their size to get up and block shots and their speed to easily score in transition and off turnovers.

Colombia won the battles on the offensive boards to get second chances at points as Yuliany Paz and Diana Prens fought for boards, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with a strong Canadian team.

Fields led Canada with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Swords added 12 points and Alexander finished just shy of a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Delgado led all scorers finishing with 22 points and 4 rebounds while Muñoz added 11 points and Paz contributed 9 rebounds.
