SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) - USA celebrated as continental champion after defeating Canada 67-46 at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2019 Final in the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The team coached by Dawn Staley defended at a high level and dominated the paint with the great additions Tina Charles (12 points and 11 rebounds), Sylvia Fowles (12 points) and Stefanie Dolson (10 points). Jordin Canada base also stood out with 11 points.
Jamie Scott led the scoring for Canada with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Turning Point: After earning a 10-point lead at half-time, USA returned to the court and mounted a 23-14 to claim a 57-38 advantage.
Game Hero: Sylvia Fowles was the best scorer of her team with 12 points in just 17 minutes of action. She also captured six rebounds and made two blocks. Fowles was eventually named the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019 MVP after averaging 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds during the continental championship.
Stats don’t lie: USA scored 42 points from the painted area and took full advantage of the opponent’s 18 turnovers to add 21 points.
The Bottom Line: USA ended the tournament undefeated, achieved its second continental title (the previous one in 2007) and stopped the streak of two consecutive championships and 17 wins held by Canada. The Canadians took their second silver medal (2013).
