SAN JUAN (Puerto Rico) - The official draw for the FIBA Women’s Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the Americas took place on Sunday at the historic Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The top eight teams from the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2019 will be playing at the FIBA Women’s Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the Americas.

The teams have been drawn into two groups:
Group A:  Dominican Republic, Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico
Group B: Argentina, USA, Brazil, Colombia

The Final Ranking of the 2019 Women’s AmeriCup outlined the pairings that guided the Draw Ceremony, with the exception of the two hosts. As hosts, Canada and Argentina were automatically assigned to different groups, while their respective pairing were drawn to the opposite group.

“This is the first step in FIBA’s new competition system for Women’s basketball. This system is something that we are very proud of because it allows us to promote women’s basketball overall, grow the game, prepare our teams and to also have our own home countries celebrate their national teams. We thank Argentina and Canada for hosting both tournaments.”, said FIBA Americas President Carol Callan.

The FIBA Women’s Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the Americas will take place from November 14-17 in Bahia Blanca (Argentina) and Edmonton (Canada).

The top two teams from each group will advance to the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2020 in February next year.

This is the start of an exciting new women's competition system for FIBA, with more than 100 teams taking part in the new system, which will also include a new qualification system for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.
