Four more teams join the Quarter-Finals train

 

YAOUNDE (Cameroon) - Wednesday was a day to remembered as the four countries that various pundits predicted will join the big-four in the Quarter-Finals of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Egypt began the race of the day in the Quarter-Finals qualification round with an 85-36 victory over Tunisia to advance to the Last Eight of the 12-nation competition.

The Egyptians gave no room to the Tunisian, not even Tunisia Wafa Loubiri's spirited efforts of 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals could stop the ambitious Egyptian from taking care of business.

Egypt showed more hunger to carry the day as they outplayed Tunisia in all departments of the game with 56-44 domination in the boards and moving the ball a lot better, finishing 19 assists against Tunisia's five.

Egypt trio of Nadine Mohammed, Hagar Amer and Raneem Elgedawy accounted for a combined 42 points of their team points haul.

In the second pairing of the day, Cote D'Ivoire showed more zeal to move forward in the championship as they dispatched Guinea 81-50 to berth in the Quarter-Finals.

Cote D'Ivoire's Djefarima Diawara led the way with 23 points. She also finished with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Her teammate Laetitia Sahie added a double-double of 14 points and t10 rebounds while Zenabou Sieza was splendid on the board with 13 rebounds.

Guinea's Fatoumata Hallow was the only player to be in double figure as she finished the game with 12 points just as the Guinean were out-played in all departments of the game.

Even though Kenya proved slightly to be the better side on the board (43-42) they were still made to kiss the championship goodbye as the rejuvenated Mozambican side raced to a 72-50 points victory to advance to the Quarter-Finals.

Mozambique's terrific guard Ingvild Mucauro, who is a medical doctor, led her team quest for a place among the big-eight with 21 points, four rebounds, seven assist, six steal with an efficiency rating of 31 the highest from by any player on the tough day.

Mozambique captain and forward Odelia Mafanela contributed 12 points, five rebounds and two steals with Kenya Melissa Otieno proving her mettle with 10 points and three rebounds.

The combined 55 points haul by the trio of Cape Verde Jade, Leitao, Joseana Vaz and Omela Livamento was not enough to stop determined Angola from going through to the Quarter-Finals of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021 as the two-time champions booked their place in the Last Eight with an 82-65 points victory.

Angola energetic point guard Italee Lucas led her team with 17 points, three rebounds, seven assists and an efficiency rating of 24. She was joined in double figures by the trio of Rosa Gala (16), Whitney Miguel (11) and Nadir Manuel (10) to aid their side going forward.
