USA – UConn Women establish record winning streak in NCAA with victory over Noles

HARTFORD (NCAA) - The University of Connecticut women's basketball team owns the longest winning streak in NCAA history after beating Florida State for the program's 89th consecutive victory.

Maya Moore, a gold-medal winner with the United States at the FIBA World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic, poured in a career-high 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as UConn won Tuesday night’s clash in Hartford over the Seminoles, 93-62.

UConn have surpassed the 88-game unbeaten run by the UCLA men's program led by John Wooden from 1971-74.

Geno Auriemma, who was only just named as one of USA Basketball's Coaches of the Year after leading the women's team to the world title, said after the win over Florida State: "I don't want my team to compare themselves to anyone.

"I'm not John Wooden and this isn't UCLA. This is Connecticut and that's good enough."

Wooden's grandson, Greg, attended Tuesday's game in Hartford.

"My grandfather would have been thrilled," he said to the Associated Press.

"He would have been absolutely thrilled to see his streak broken by a women's basketball team.

"He thought, especially in the last 10 years, that the best basketball was played at the collegiate level - and it wasn't by the men."
