PHILADELPHIA (NCAA) - No. 1 North Carolina continue to look for a challenge.
The Tar Heels went on the road Tuesday looking for the sort of tough game that can ready them for ACC battle. They found a tough crowd in Philadelphia, but Pennsylvania proved no kind of opposition as they were crushed 106-71.
The win sees North Carolina improve to 8-0 on the season.
Tyler Hansbrough led all scorers with 29 points, making 12 of 16 shots from the floor and grabbing 10 rebounds as he reacted to a crowd that got on his case from the early stages.
"The crowd was getting on (Hansbrough) a little bit early and that sort of made me feel pretty good," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said.
"I knew that he was going to be even more focused than he normally is. As a coach, I've never had anybody more focused and anybody more driven than he is."
Danny Green scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half for the Tar Heels, who played the fourth of five straight road games.
Wayne Ellington, who attended Episcopal Academy in the Philadelphia area, started slowly and finished with 13 points. He was among five scorers in double figures for the Tar Heels.
But while North Carolina had it easy in the City of Brotherly Love, No. 2 Memphis had a very different experience up in New York as they were taken to overtime before beating Southern California 62-58.
In their worst performance of the season so far, the Tigers barely did enough to keep their record perfect.
Chris Douglas-Roberts symbolised the Tigers' troubles, shooting only four of 13 from the field and missing a key free throw with eight seconds left in regulation.
Freshman Derrick Rose scored just eight points, and it was left to Robert Dozier to lead the Tigers with 13 points. Even he had his problems, making six of 15 from the field and missing a potential game-winning three pointer in regulation.
Luckily for Memphis, USC's own star was off his game as freshman OJ Mayo shot six of 20 en route to 16 points.
Poor shooting was also a theme in Peoria where No. 10 Michigan State held on to beat Bradley 66-61.
Raymar Morgan led the Spartans with 15 points while Team USA man Drew Neitzel and freshman Kalin Lucas each scored 13 for a Michigan State team that made only 24 of 58 (41%) from the field.
No. 12 Tennessee was given a scare by in-state rival Chattanooga, but headed back to Knoxville with a 76-70 victory.
Jordan Howell hit a pair of three-pointers during a decisive 14-3 second-half run as the Volunteers were finally able to kill off the threat of the Mocs late in the game.
Star guard Chris Lofton continues to struggle with his trademark three-point stroke, going four of 12 from the arc, but he led Tennessee with 16 points.
JaJaun Smith added 13.
