BEIJING (Olympics) - Sylvia Fowles is a rookie in the USA national team but is already set to play in a gold medal game at the Olympics.
Fowles, the leading rebounder for Team USA at 8.9 per game, spoke to FIBA.com after her side’s big semi-final win over Russia.
FIBA: Congratulations Sylvia. Has it kicked in yet that you will be playing at the Olympics final?
Fowles: I can't believe it, it's kind of emotional. After this game (against Russia) I felt very good and very confident. I will be ready to play for the final game.
FIBA: Team USA looked to have cruised into the final but how challenging was it to reach the top game in Beijing?
Fowles: It always looked as if we dominated from the outside but it is always a struggle. Nothing is easy. Every team we have played has always given us a run. We just go out there and get concentrated and play team ball, to put the team together and let them know that it's not about individual, it's about the team, getting the job done.
FIBA: You have had a great tournament. How satisfied are you with your performances in your first Olympic Games?
Fowles: I am happy with myself so far but I also have to credit my team-mates because they have helped me so far through this tournament and to get me to get better every game.
FIBA: You will face world champions Australia in the final, a team you beat three weeks ago at the Diamond Ball in a close game. Australia may not be at full strength with Penny Taylor struggling with an ankle injury. What are your feelings heading into that game?
Fowles: Not to take anything away from Penny, but Australia is a very good team and we will have to keep the same focus regardless of whether she plays or not. It doesn't change anything. It's going to be a very good final and it's going to be very interesting. We are going to get ready for them. But I feel we can go all the way.
FIBA: Has the Olympic experience met your expectations?
Fowles: The Olympics has been more than I had expected. It's been a good journey for the 12 players to have fun on and off the court.
