Mexico City — A new era begins for the Mexican Basketball Sports Association (ADEMEBA, for its Spanish acronym) with the election of the new directive and new President, Xóchitl Lagarda Burton, a Mexican entrepreneur who is renowned for her business in the public and private sectors.
The arrival of an entrepreneurial profile to the ADEMEBA presidency intends to transform the organization’s model, develop a strategy that is aligned with FIBA, and to define communication and coordination mechanisms alongside the state associations and commissions.
The objectives set forth by ADEMEBA to strengthen their core and face the challenges of basketball in Mexico are to unite the willpowers and efforts of the members of the basketball world, and to develop a solid organization of the Association in benefit of the sport.
Some of the main subjects that will be tackled by all commissions are gender equality and education, with the objective of transforming all aspects and frameworks of the new projects that will develop basketball in the nation. “Sports are one of the main pieces to transform society. We will build a team that will make all Mexicans proud,” said Lagarda, who in February of 2018 received the “Olympic Medalists of Mexico” acknowledgement during the “Conferences toward a transversal view of sports and health, education, social development, economy and public safety,” in a ceremony that took place in the Mexican Olympic Committee.
These commissions will work together in the technical coordination, competitions, legal framework, governance aspects, professional and development leagues, 3x3 and mini basketball.
In this context, preparing the technical bodies is fundamental to guaranteeing the highest standards of quality and professional ethics when developing Mexican basketball talents, as is generating opportunities for the competitions of both sexes in all categories.
ADEMEBA will work with the state associations of Mexico’s National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE, for its Spanish acronym), led by FIBA’s Ana Gabriela Guevara and by the Mexican Olympic Committee. The objective is to join efforts and value the millions of persons that practice basketball in Mexico —from the courts in the rural areas to the national teams.
FIBA President Horacio Muratore talked about Xóchtil’s arrival to the ADEMEBA presidency: “We support the new president. We are very happy with this new movement, for which it will be paramount to establish collaborations with the Association and the Mexican institutions.”
FIBA Americas Executive Director, Carlos Alves, also stated: “Mexico is so important that we wish to see them among the 10 best World qualified teams. Now we are before a new development program in which we will work together with the President, who is coming in with great ideas and will receive our full support.”
