LEON & IRAPUATO (Finland) - There were scenes of celebration in Leon as Finland picked up a historic maiden victory at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup in what was also their first ever success on the global stage at a FIBA women's youth event.
Making their first appearance in the competition and having never stepped out for an FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup, it proved to be a landmark day as they outlasted Argentina 64-58.
Finland bounced back from their day two mauling against Spain and opening day heartache when they were beaten narrowly by Japan on their debut. The success was built around a spectacular 18-0 run start to the second half as Finland snapped the game open completely with a jaw-dropping 26-2 third period.
However, they did have to hold off a late rescue mission from their opponents to get the job done. Eevi Seppa was the difference-maker with a fine 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Finland now look forward to seeing who they will play in the Round of 16.
