South Sudan awarded one of the two final wildcards for the 2025 Women's AfroBasket

    Press Release

The 12-team line-up is almost complete.

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - South Sudan have been awarded one of the final two wildcards for the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket, the FIBA Regional Office for Africa confirmed on Tuesday.

The other wildcard is expected to go to a team from FIBA Africa Zone 2.

The newcomers join Egypt and Mozambique, who received their invitations earlier this month.

The 2025 Women's AfroBasket will take place from 25 July to 3 August in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, with the tournament draw set for 23 April in Abidjan.

South Sudan finished third in the FIBA Africa Zone 5 qualifiers for this year's African Championship last month.

In the qualifiers in Cairo, South Sudan beat Kenya twice and edged out Burundi, but losses to eventual winners Uganda and hosts Egypt relegated them to third place in the tournament.

The announcement marks South Sudan's debut at the Women's AfroBasket.

Meanwhile, FIBA Africa reiterated that a team from Zone 2 will be awarded the final ticket for this year's Women's AfroBasket.

The teams competing in this year's Women's AfroBasket are Côte d'Ivoire (hosts), Nigeria (2023 champions), Senegal (2023 runners-up), Mali (2023 bronze medallists), Rwanda (2023 fourth-placers), Cameroon (Zone 4 qualifiers), Uganda (Zone 5 qualifiers), Angola (Zone 6 qualifiers), Egypt (wildcard), Mozambique (wildcard), South Sudan (wildcard) and Zone 2 (wildcard).
