MIAMI (United States) – The 2025 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers are over, and we now know the 12 teams that will be competing in the continental tournament at the end of August in Nicaragua. After the Window 3 games, there were teams that closed on a strong note and reached their objective, while others faltered down the stretch but will still take part in the event. Let’s look at who’s in the best shape at the moment and then, closer to the tournament, we can compare the rankings based on the group draw, the available players and potential reinforcements. The order of these teams has nothing to do with the FIBA World Ranking Presented by Nike. They’re ranked according to how they finished at the conclusion of Window 3.
1. USA
Overall record: 5-1 Window 3: 2-0 After being behind Canada and Brazil throughout the whole Qualifiers, the Americans finished strong by winning a pair of road games to take over first place. First, they narrowly beat Puerto Rico in San Juan and then handled Bahamas without much trouble. United States won their last 4 games and, as usual, will be a top candidate at AmeriCup thanks to their infinite universe of capable players to choose from.
2. BRA
Overall record: 5-1 Window 3: 1-1 The South American giants went into the last window having already qualified for AmeriCup and used those games to try other players. In their visit to Uruguay, with Yago Santos on the roster, they dominated. However, they then went to Panama without Yago and found a confident opponent that upset them. Losing their unbeaten streak on the last game caused them to lose the top spot in the ranking. They’re coming off a finals appearance at the last AmeriCup and last summer they returned to the Olympics after a long absence, so they’re clearly capable of winning it all.
3. ARG
Overall record: 4-2 Window 3: 1-1 Argentina was able to get past a tough Group A, finishing in first place. Winning both games at home during Window 2 put them in a better spot, to the point that even after losing to Venezuela on the road they were able to punch their ticket then and there. They then visited Colombia and won emphatically to earn the first place. During this process, Argentina was able to integrate young players like Juan Fernández and Gonzalo Corbalán. If they’re able to bring their stars playing in Europe, they will be a clear candidate to retain their AmeriCup crown.
4. CAN
Overall record: 4-2 Window 3: 0-2 The Canadians coasted on an excellent first 2 windows and, despite losing on the road in Dominican Republic and Mexico in Window 3, they finished atop a tough Group C. The pair of losses have them dropping down these rankings for the first time in the Qualifiers. However, they still have plenty of potential to make noise at AmeriCup.
5. DOM
Overall record: 4-2 Window 3: 2-0 Dominican Republic finished the Qualifiers on a high note with a couple of home wins. They took care of business against Nicaragua, but first they had defeated Canada in a key matchup. A loss there would’ve meant elimination since Mexico also went on to beat Canada in the final game. The win generated a triple tie atop Group C, with the Dominicans finishing in second place. This is one of the teams that improved the most in recent years and they have a lot of talent playing in the U.S. and Europe. They’re expected to be a tough out at AmeriCup as long as many of their stars show up.
6. PUR
Overall record: 2-3 Window 3: 0-1 Starting with the second window of these Qualifiers, Puerto Rico unveiled a new head coach and also tried several new players. For Window 3, they relied on their best players (including many from the Olympics squad) and even got the long-awaited debut from Markus Howard. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to beat United States at home. Looking ahead to the AmeriCup, their chances will depend on how many of their best players they can bring to the tournament.
7. URU
Overall record: 4-2 Window 3: 1-1 Uruguay took care of business early in Group B and just like Brazil, they punched their ticket during Window 2. They currently have a young and talented roster that makes for an intriguing mix heading into the AmeriCup. In this final window, they lost to Brazil but recovered to beat a weak Paraguay squad. That was the key for them: despite dropping both games to Brazil, they easily got past Panama and Paraguay in the other games.
8. VEN
Overall record: 3-3 Window 3: 2-0 Venezuela responded to adversity and showed why they’ve been successful in the last decade. They needed to win the final 2 games at home and benefit from other results, and all of it worked out for them despite missing a pair of key veterans like Michael Carrera and Nestor Colmenares (injury). The defense, like in years prior, was key and the calling card of new head coach Ronald Guillén. First, they stopped an Argentinian team featuring Facundo Campazzo and then, in a nailbiter, they beat Chile in overtime to qualify. With a lot of their best players getting up there in age and a lack of up-and-coming replacements, their outlook for AmeriCup is unpredictable.
9. PAN
Overall record: 3-3 Window 3: 2-0 Panama showed that when they have their best players, they can make it hard on anyone. This time, besides Iverson Molinar (the best player of Window 3), they also have Akil Mitchell and Ernesto Oglivie. With them, they got a historic win over Brazil after their blowout victory over Paraguay to earn their spot in AmeriCup, where they could be a dark horse.
10. COL
Overall record: 3-3 Window 3: 1-1 Colombia reached their objective in front of their home crowd, beating Chile to reach the AmeriCup for the third consecutive time. And while that gives them plenty of reasons to celebrate, they missed out on the chance to finish second (or even first) in Group A when they lost to Argentina. Their opponent certainly wasn’t an easy one, but the other 2 teams in the group (Venezuela and Chile) were able to take a game from the group favorite. Beating Argentina would’ve represented a big confidence boost ahead of the AmeriCup.
11. BAH
Overall record: 2-4 Window 3: 1-1 The Caribbeans are in a celebratory mood because they’ll be going to the AmeriCup for the second time in history (1995). Despite their negative record, beating Cuba by 23 points in the first game of Window 3 allowed them to win the head-to-head matchup by 9 points. This is consistent with their recent string of successes, including the proliferation of good players in the NBA like Buddy Hield, Deandre Ayton, Kai Jones and veteran Eric Gordon, as well as top NCAA prospect VJ Edgecombe Jr. from Baylor University. To be able to fight for a medal this summer, they’ll need at least 2 of those players to be on the roster.
12. NCA
Overall record: 0-6 Window 3: 0-2 The AmeriCup hosts finished winless in a tough Group C that featured 3 teams that played in the last FIBA World Cup like Canada, Dominican Republic and Mexico. They only managed to lose one of those games by single digits. The plan for the tournament is to add some players currently competing in American college basketball to put on a good performance in front of their home fans.
