MIAMI (United States) – Window 2 of the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 Qualifiers is over and a pair of teams, Brazil and Uruguay, punched their ticket to next year’s continental tournament. Others, like Canada, United States and Argentina, took big steps toward the objective. After the games played November 21-25, some teams moved spaces compared to the last edition of the Power Rankings. This is how they’re ranked:
1. BRA (-)
Record: 4-0 (2-0 in Window 2) In a Group B where they were expected to be the prohibitive favorites, Brazil took care of business and dominated their first 4 games on their way to qualifying for the FIBA AmeriCup. The squad coached by Aleksandar Petrovic looked solid across the board and even managed to give minutes some of their younger players during this window. With these November games, Brazil closed a wonderful 2024 that included winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia and returning to the Olympic Games in Paris.
2. CAN (+1)
Record: 4-0 (2-0 in Window 2) The North Americans, just like they did in the previous window, went full throttle and notched another pair of victories to stay unbeaten through 4 games. In a very tough Group C that only offers 2 spots in next year’s tournament, Canada dominated difficult opponents like Dominican Republic and Mexico. They now only need one more win to qualify. They’ll seek it on the road, but from everything we’ve seen, they’re poised to reach their objective.
3. USA (-1)
Record: 3-1 (2-0 in Window 2) United States recovered and reestablished themselves during this window as one of the best teams in the continent after beating both Puerto Rico and Bahamas by more than 20 points. Those wins put them one victory away from qualifying. The arrival of Stephen Silas to the bench changed the team’s demeanor, and they looked more fluid on offensive than they did in the previous window in February.
4. ARG (+1)
Record: 3-1 (2-0 in Window 2) Argentina, another continental giant, shined with 2 wins to retake control of Group A. After a first window where they looked shaky, Pablo Prigioni’s squad defended their home court in emphatic wins over Venezuela and Colombia. Many of their players are still very young, like Juan Fernandez and Gonzalo Corbalan, but they stepped up and put the team in a great position to qualify to the AmeriCup heading into the February window.
5. PUR (-1)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) Puerto Rico, despite dropping a spot compared to the last rankings, still find themselves in a favorable spot when it comes to qualifying to next year’s tournament. The boricuas faced a tough slate with 2 games on the road, but after losing to United States, they went to Havana and notched a huge victory against a tough Cuban squad. In the next window, they’ll have control of their fate against Bahamas and Cuba. Playing at home in front of their crowd should help them clinch one of the 2 available tickets out of Group D.
6. URU (+2)
Record: 3-1 (1-1 in Window 2) The work they started in the first window with back-to-back wins against Panama was extended during this window when they beat Paraguay on the road. They knew that the matchup against Brazil would be a tall task, so they focused their energy on beating the weakest team in the group and delivered. Now that they’ve qualified for AmeriCup, they’ll have to focus on solidifying the squad during the last 2 games at home.
7. DOM (-1)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) Dominican Republic failed in their attempt to get a win in Canada, but then took care of business by beating Nicaragua. In February, they’re heading home and will try to get a couple of wins to reach their objective. The task won’t be easy, since they’ll face Canada once again. The positive news is that they’ve dominated the matchup against Mexico and in case of a tie with them, they’ll be favored.
8. CHI (+2)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) They started the window with a home loss against Colombia, but then got back on track with a blowout win over Venezuela, a team they hadn’t beat in 45 years. That 25-point victory put them in an advantageous position in case of a head-to-head tie, or even a triple-tie. They now need to get at least one win against Colombia, or away in Venezuela.
9. MEX (-2)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) Mexico’s situation in Group C is very similar to that of Dominican Republic. During this window, they managed to beat Nicaragua but couldn’t get past Canada. In February, they’ll need to get a pair of wins in front of their home crowd, but one of those opponents is Canada. What’s working against Mexico is that they lost the series against Dominican Republic, so that would eliminate them in case of a head-to-head tie.
10. CUB (-1)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) Cuba had a positive window because they beat a direct rival by a significant amount. Their 14-point victory over Bahamas allows them to control their own destiny. The Cubans couldn’t beat a superior Puerto Rican team, so they’ll focus all their energies on the February duel against Bahamas. Even if they were to lose by less than 13 points, they’ll practically punch their ticket if United States beats Bahamas once again.
11. COL (+2)
Record: 2-2 (1-1 in Window 2) Their home win against Chile put them in a good spot toward grabbing one of the tickets to the AmeriCup. In the next window they’ll play host to both Argentina and Chile. The former looks like a tall task, but if they can beat Chile like they already did on the road, they will reach their objective. What they must avoid at all costs is to lose both games, since they already lost the series against Venezuela on point differential and in case of a tie they’d be eliminated.
12. PAN (+2)
Record: 1-3 (1-1 in Window 2) Despite having won only one game, Panama is poised to clinch the third ticket out of Group B. During this second window, they dominated Paraguay on the road and will host them again in February. With another win over them, they’ll qualify for AmeriCup. Even a loss by fewer than 37 points virtually gets them in.
13. VEN (-2)
Record: 1-3 (0-2 in Window 2) Venezuela was the team that had it worst during this window after suffering double-digit losses to Argentina and Chile. They hadn’t lost to Chile in 45 years and what makes matters worse is the 25-point margin. They must now win both home games in February, against the same opponents, and get one more favorable result elsewhere. It’s possible that some of their veteran stars could return as they try to qualify.
14. BAH (-2)
Record: 1-3 (0-2 in Window 2) Last week’s loss against Cuba put them in an uncomfortable spot due to the double-digit margin (14 points). However, they’ll now get a chance to return the favor against Cuba at home. Their chances will depend on what players they have available. Cuba’s shown in these Qualifiers that they’re a tough squad, but they haven’t been able to win on the road. Bahamas must capitalize on that.
15. NCA (-)
Record: 0-4 (0-2 in Window 2) Nicaragua hasn’t been able to do much in a tough Group C, where they’ve had to face 3 experienced squads that qualified for the FIBA World Cup like Canada, Dominican Republic and Mexico. They’ll now try to avoid going winless in the last window, but they’ll be on the road for both games.
16. PAR (-)
Record: 0-4 (0-2 in Window 2) Paraguay still hasn’t won a game since the new qualifying format was established. They had a couple of good opportunities at home during this window, but Panama and Uruguay looked stronger. It’s tough to seem them break through in February since they’ll have to face them again, but on the road. FIBA
