The renowned Argentine coach takes the helm of the Brazilian club, replacing Gustavo Conti.

MIAMI (United States) – Argentine coach Sergio “Oveja” Hernández has been announced as the new head coach of Flamengo, the club confirmed on Wednesday via an official statement. He will replace Brazilian coach Gustavo Conti, who led the team until last Monday in the Basketball Champions League Americas, finishing the Group B stage with a 5-1 record. Hernández boasts an extensive and successful coaching career. As head coach of Argentina’s national team, he secured a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, a runner-up finish at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China, and three second-place finishes at the FIBA AmeriCup (2007, 2015, and 2017).

At the club level, he has coached in Argentina’s National League and in countries such as Spain and Puerto Rico. Hernández is set to make his debut with Flamengo on February 28 in Brazil’s NBB. His first appearance in the BCL Americas will come in March during the Quarterfinals series against Paisas. "Joining Flamengo is the realization of a career goal for me as a coach," Hernández told the team’s communications department. "I hope to instill my identity in the team. I like a dynamic, aggressive style of basketball, with a compact defense that forces opponents into mistakes and a fast-paced transition offense. At the same time, we must have patience and intelligence to make the best decisions on every possession. I’m highly motivated and eager to take on this new challenge," he added. Flamengo is one of the most successful clubs in Basketball Champions League Americas history. The team has participated in all six editions of the competition, winning the title in 2021 and finishing as runners-up three times (2020, 2023, and 2024). This season, they have already secured a spot in the Quarterfinals.
