MOSCOW (Russian Basketball Federation) - The Russian Basketball Federation on Monday elected Alexander Krasnenkov as its new president. Outgoing president Sergey Chernov was elected honorary president and will remain involved with the federation, serving as special adviser to Krasnenkov in all basketball matters. Both decisions came unanimously.

The extraordinary assembly, which was held in Moscow, also elected a new board, which sees the number of members reduced from 32 to 11.

Following the election, Chernov – who is a member of FIBA’s Central Board – and Krasnenkov – currently also president of St Petersburg’s Basketball Club Spartak – were joined by the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and National Olympic Committee president Viktor Zuhkov for a meeting with FIBA President Yvan Mainini and FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann. The purpose of the meeting was to foster the relationship between Russia and the FIBA family and to discuss common projects for the future.

Both the President and the Secretary General commented that it had been a useful and fruitful meeting.

"Russia is a big basketball nation and has played an important role in the history of the game. As such, Russia is of course an important member of the FIBA family. We welcome Mr Krasnenkov and are pleased that the transition has been made smoothly with unanimous votes and future development plans are devised in agreement with the authorities. We look forward to our close future collaboration with the Russian Basketball Federation," they concurred.
