MIES (Switzerland) – Almost doubling the numbers of the previous year, 2023 was fruitful in using the Propose a Project platform to propel the movement of Basketball For Good across the globe.

The FIBA Foundation believes that basketball has the power to empower, educate, and inspire youth and facilitates this by implementing Basketball For Good projects around the world.

Looking to support and assist projects and initiatives that operate under the same social footprint of changing lives through the game of basketball, the Foundation has launched its Propose a Project platform.

Selected projects will receive various forms of aid in terms of finances, equipment provision, and cohesion with the broader network of Basketball For Good change makers, all with additional opportunities for exchange, and guided mentoring for their project rollout and operation.

In 2023, the Foundation considerably increased its support with 42 projects assisted in 35 countries. Over 2,500 Molten basketballs were shipped and financial support was granted to the successful applicants. Support was provided in all 5 regions, and types of countries, regardless of size, location, economic stance, and even basketball rating.

These projects yielded positive results such as impacting people with disabilities in Suriname, engaging marginalized children in Papua New Guinea, as well as aiding HIV/AIDS awareness and education in Kenya just to name a few.

The Propose a Project initiative is open for all organizations using basketball to create social change. Evidently, among the successful 2023 applicants were National Federations, FIBA Foundation Youth Leaders, and Mini Basketball delegates, as well as community active NGOs.

Aiming to diversify its impact, the FIBA Foundation implemented categories of projects based on the United Nations Social Development Goals as follows: Basketball for Health & Wellbeing, Equality & Inclusion, Culture & Education, Peace & Conflict Resolution, and Climate &Environment. The vast range of categories will also allow more applicants to apply in a category related to their activities.

2023, saw projects tapping into areas of social reintegration by Austria based, Phoenix – Training for Life Program which prepared individuals in prison for their impending release, Infrastructural development at the YMCA Siderno in Italy with a structural reformation project of old courts, and combatting mental health issues in Tanzania by one of the Foundation’s very own Youth Leaders, Kamal Masud.

The annual Propose a Project application window has officially launched for 2024 and will be open from 15 January to 31 March for all interested applicants. Stories diving deeper into the success of the 2023 projects will be featured by the FIBA Foundation in the coming weeks.
