FRANCA (Brazil) – Defending champions Quimsa showed their resilience on the road, defeating SESI Franca at Ginásio Pedrocão, 88-78, to even the BCL Americas Quarterfinal series at one win apiece. This Thursday, March 13, the two teams will meet again, with the winner advancing to the Final 4.
Turning point
Quimsa controlled the game from the start and managed to fend off multiple comeback attempts by the home team. Franca’s final push came with five minutes left when Didi Louzada hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two points (72-70). However, the reigning champions responded immediately with back-to-back three-pointers from Juan Brussino (78-71). They then extended their lead to double digits after Brandon Robinson drew an unsportsmanlike foul, sank both free throws, and, on the ensuing possession, Agustín Pérez added another basket to make it 82-71 with just 2:45 remaining. Franca never recovered from that blow and ultimately fell short.
Player of the game
Tavario Miller was dominant at the rim, making 10 of 11 two-point attempts, plus one three-pointer. The big man led Quimsa’s offense with 23 points. Robinson showcased his versatility with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Pérez added 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Brussino was also instrumental in the victory, contributing 12 points (4-7 from three) and 9 assists.
For Franca, Lucas Dias’ 28 points (including three three-pointers and 6 rebounds) weren’t enough. Behind him, Louzada added 15 points, and Charles Hinkle chipped in with 12.
Stats don’t lie
Quimsa never allowed Franca to take the lead, relying on a highly efficient offense. The team from Santiago del Estero shot an impressive 57% from the field (35-61), including 11 of 23 from beyond the arc (48%), and was a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. They also dished out 22 assists. On the other hand, the Brazilian squad struggled from long range (8-32 from three) and lacked their usual depth, with their bench contributing only 8 points compared to Quimsa’s 20.
Bottom line
Despite the setback, Franca will have a chance to bounce back at home in front of their fans. However, they still have fresh memories of last season, when they were in the same position and lost both of their home games in the Quarterfinals against Hebraica Macabi (URU). Meanwhile, reigning champions Quimsa will aim to reach their fifth Final 4 in six BCL Americas seasons.
