A pair of free throws by Larry Ayuso sealed the win in the final seconds for Puerto Rico after the attack by Carl English and Jermaine Anderson tied the game at 41 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.
Ten rebounds by Daniel Santiago, who arrived just a couple of hours before, were decisive in the win against a team who had Joel Anthony dominating the paint with 14 rebounds.
Guard Filiberto Rivera played 20:36 minutes, four more than the started Carlos Arroyo who didn't score and never played again after suffering a fall. Larry Ayuso led Puerto Rico with 13 points.
The first 20 minutes of action were rough for Canada who only shot 4-25 from the field and 1-11 from three as they closed down 31-17.
Meanwhile Puerto Rico had a great reaction in the second quarter led by four three pointers, two of them by Ayuso while Luis Villafañe came from the bench and grabbed 6 boards.
