PUR - Arroyo waits for birth of first son

MIAMI (FIBA Americas Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Puerto Rico's Carlos Arroyo has decided to put his career on hold and remain in Florida until his wife gives birth to their third child in mid-December.

Arroyo and Xiomara, parents of two girls, will have a son for the first time.

"I've decided to be with my wife the last two months of her pregnancy," Arroyo said to Primera Hora.

"It's my first boy.

"After that, I will take flight."

Arroyo apparently has an offer on the table from Galatasaray in Turkey, which is the country where he won three trophies last season as the starting point guard of Besiktas.

He captured a Turkish Cup, the EuroChallenge title and the Turkish Basketbol Ligi crown before linking up with his national team and playing at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Caracas, Venezuela.

Gala are playing in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague and are led by Arroyo's coach at Besiktas, Ergin Ataman.

Arroyo isn't counting on one, but if an offer were to arrive from an NBA club, he could remain in North America.

As it is, he is keeping fit by working out at Florida International University, which is where he played American college basketball.

Arroyo, 33, is one of the best known players ever to emerge from Puerto Rico.

His most famous moment in the national team jersey came eight years ago at the Athens Olympics when he led the Puerto Ricans past the United States on the opening day of the tournament.

Arroyo had 24 points, seven assists and four steals as Puerto Rico stunned an American side that had LeBron James, Tim Duncan and Carmelo Anthony, 92-73.

He averaged 19.3 points in Greece as Puerto Rican finished sixth.

Arroyo is expected to be in the squad next summer when Puerto Rico travel to Caracas, Venezuela, for the FIBA Americas Championship and attempt to qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
