FRIBOURG - Swiss Basketball on Tuesday announced that as part of its 90th anniversary celebrations, the federation will change the name of the national cup from Swiss Cup to Patrick Baumann Cup, in honor of the late FIBA Secretary General, who passed away on October 13.
The announcement came as Switzerland's national basketball governing body confirmed details about the event's finals that will take place at Tissot Arena in the city of Biel/Bienne on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Swiss Basketball President Giancarlo Sergi said: "Our federation owed it to thank, from the bottom of its heart, Patrick Baumann and to pay homage to him for the colossal work he did not only for basketball worldwide but particularly in Switzerland. We were delighted that FIBA and Patrick's family gave us their blessings to go ahead with this way of honoring Patrick and thank them for doing so."
FIBA President Horacio Muratore said: "We are deeply moved and thankful to Swiss Basketball for honoring Patrick in this way. As everyone knows, the development and growth of basketball all over the world was of huge importance to Patrick. As a proud Swiss national, he wanted to have a strong, structured and competitive Swiss federation. He always kept a close eye on the state of the game in the country - particularly at youth level - and regularly attended the Swiss Cup Finals."
Joining Mr Sergi at the press conference to make the announcement were François Thiébaud, Tissot President, and Eric Fehr, Mayor of Biel/Bienne.
