Shipley re-elected as FIBA Oceania President in Zone Assembly

Gold Coast (Australia) – FIBA Oceania’s Board convened its Zone Assembly and have re-elected Burton Shipley as the President for FIBA's upcoming cycle (2019-2023) on Saturday 4 May in Gold Coast, Australia. FIBA Oceania is the first zone to elect its President for this new cycle. This makes Shipley the first elected member of the FIBA Central Board for 2019-2023 starting after the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in China.

The Zone Assembly also elected the new board members:

“I am humbled by the honor to lead FIBA Oceania for another 4-year term. There are many opportunities in a Zone like this and I look forward to working with the team. The region has a  promising future and we can achieve great things with the help of our National Federations. ” said Shipley.

The Zone Assembly was graced by FIBA President Horacio Muratore, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss and FIBA Vice President Hamane Niang

“It has been really good for the colleagues from the headquarters to visit us. It does give them a chance for the feel for the Zone, for what it is and for what its challenges are. It puts things into perspective,” said Shipley.

FIBA President Horacio Muratorejk congratulated Shipley: “Congratulations to Burton Shipley for his re-election as President of FIBA Oceania and to the newly elected Oceania Board Members. FIBA is looking forward to witnessing the positive impact they will have on the region and is excited to see further achievements in the upcoming cycle,”  

 “We are delighted to have attended the Oceania Assembly and workshop. Oceania was the first Zone to embrace the new FIBA governance and has set the pace for other regions of the world to follow also in terms of development programs like Basketball for Good,” said Zagklis.

The 2014-2019 FIBA Oceania Assembly Report was presented to the Congress and highlighted the key achievements of the three main objectives set in 2014:  doubling the number of participants, raising the profile of basketball and improving the capabilities of national federations. A planning workshop was organized for the members giving them the opportunity to interact and exchange views on their strengths, challenges and strategic objectives for the future.

“The National Federation workshop was a fantastic addition to the Zone Assembly and we can only commend our Regional Office for coordinating it. We received first-hand input from the situation on the ground and certainly this feedback will enrich our decision-making process at the regional and global level,” Zagklis said.

The Zone Assembly awarded outgoing FIBA Central Board Member, Scott Derwin, FIBA Oceania Member of Honor and Papua New Guinea’s Ronnie Mea, the Patricia Ramsay Award.
