USA, Argentina, Brazil, Canada book first four tickets for U19 World Cup

TIJUANA (Mexico) - Argentina, Brazil, Canada and United States have booked their tickets for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 by reaching the FIBA U18 Americas Championship 2022 Semi-Finals.

TIJUANA (Mexico) - Argentina, Brazil, Canada and United States became the first four teams to book their tickets for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023 by reaching the FIBA U18 Americas Championship 2022 Semi-Finals.

The four FIBA Americas sides join hosts Hungary as the first five of 16 teams that will meet up in Debrecen, Hungary from June 24 to July 2 for the 16th edition of the U19 World Cup.

United States have never missed the U19 World Cup and won the title eight times, including four of the last five crowns. The Americans locked up their spot in the 2023 field by knocking off Mexico 92-64, though they needed a 33-7 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to put away the host team.

Canada kept the Americans from winning five U19 titles in a row as they celebrated in 2017 and also took bronze in 2021. The Canadians are playing in the U19 World Cup for a 13th time and ninth straight after fighting past Puerto Rico 86-78.

Argentina have only missed one U19 World Cup - that coming in 1987 - though the South Americans have not reached the podium since placing third in 1979 and 1991. Argentina made quick work of Ecuador in the Quarter-Finals with a dominant 92-47 victory to book their ticket to Hungary.

Brazil, for their part, finally make it back to the global stage at the junior level, reaching the U19 World Cup for the first time since 2013. Brazil, who reached the title game in 1979 and took third place in 1983, will be making their ninth appearance after knocking off Dominican Republic 66-52.

The FIBA U18 European Championship 2022 will be played from July 30 to August 7 in Izmir, Turkey, where the next five teams will lock up their tickets.

The dates for the FIBA U18 African Championship 2022 and FIBA U18 Asian Championship 2022 have not been announced, with two African teams qualifying for the U19 World Cup and four from Asia.
