BOSTON (NBA) - Out with the old and in with the new was one way to sum things up on Monday night as Miami's Big Three outplayed that of Boston to take a 98-90 overtime win and move within a game of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.
Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh combined to score 83 of Miami's 98 points as well as grab 35 of the team's 45 total rebounds.
More importantly, the trio delivered in the clutch by accounting for all of their team's points in the extra session, outscoring Boston 12-4 to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
"It was a challenge put to LeBron, Chris and I to lead the way," Wade said afterwards.
"We're the guys. We're the ones who get all the attention. We're the ones that get all the praise.
"This team is going to go as far us us three takes it."
Boston's own Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen had mixed fortunes.
Pierce had his second consecutive outing of 27 points and Allen added 17, but both were kept in check down the stretch.
Garnett, coming off a Game 3 win in which he had 28 points and 18 rebounds and shut down Bosh, finished with just seven points, missing nine of his 10 field goals.
More importantly, he got thoroughly outplayed by Bosh, who had 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Miami now look to close out the series in Miami on Wednesday and they expect Boston won't give them anything easy.
"Wednesday night will be our greatest challenge that we've had with this group so far," said Heat head coach Erick Spoelstra. "If we're real about what we want to do, we have to beat the Boston Celtics at their best."
A win on Wednesday would see the Heat return to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since their championship run of 2006.
It would also allow James to exact a measure of revenge over the Celtics, who cut short his playoff runs with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2008 and 2010.
Meanwhile, the Oklahoma City Thunder tied up their series with the Memphis Grizzlies at 2-2 by winning an epic Game 4 133-123 after three overtimes.
The visiting team won by virtue of having more energy left in the third and final extra period.
Kevin Durant logged almost 57 minutes out of a possible 63 and finished with 35 points and 13 rebounds.
He had six points in the third overtime to put the game beyond Memphis' reach.
"This game is something people are going to be talking about for a while, I'm glad I'm a part of it," Durant said afterwards.
Russell Westbrook played six fewer minutes than his USA team-mate and scored a playoff career-best 40 points.
Zach Randolph and Spain international Marc Gasol combined for 60 points and 35 rebounds for Memphis, but the home team made just one of nine shot attempts in the third overtime.
Grizzlies guard Mike Conley hit a deep and desperation three-pointer to tie the game and send the game into its first overtime.
Venezuela rookie Greivis Vasquez then hit an impossible and contested three-pointer to send the game to a second additional period before Gasol's tip-in in that session forced a third overtime.
The Grizzlies will feel frustrated at the final outcome as they led by as many as 18 in the first half.
The one-two punch of Durant and Westbrook though proved too much, especially as they combined to make 26 of 29 free-throws.
Game 5 is in Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
