DALLAS (NBA) - The Dallas Mavericks refused to lose on Monday night in the Western Conference Finals against Oklahoma City.
Led by Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 40 points, the Mavs hit back from a 15-point deficit with five minutes left to force overtime and then beat the Thunder 112-105.
Dallas, who split the first two games at home, have now won two straight at Oklahoma City to seize a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven showdown.
"We kept believing," Nowitzki said of the comeback.
"And finally, we got some rebounds. In the last couple of minutes, we got some great stops."
When Kevin Durant popped a three-ball with 5:06 to go, the Thunder had a 99-84 lead.
But the Mavs stormed back and closed the gap.
Trailing 99-89 after two free-throws by Jason Kidd, Dallas turned the game over to Nowitzki and he scored nine straight points for his team as they reduced the Thunder lead to 101-98.
After Shawn Marion split a pair from the line for the Mavs and Thabo Sefolosha missed from long range for Oklahoma City, Nowitzki drew a foul and sank two from the charity stripe to knot the game at 101-101.
Durant's attempt to win the game at the death with a shot from the arc failed and overtime was needed.
Dallas then took the lead for good with 40 seconds to play when Kidd buried a three for a 108-105 advantage.
Russell Westbrook missed with a runner and Jason Terry added two free-throws as Dallas claimed a famous triumph.
Oklahoma City's Durant finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds but turned the ball over nine times.
"There's no doubt it was a tough loss," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said.
"If this loss did not hurt, there's no such thing as a loss that can hurt you."
Game 5 is on Wednesday night in Dallas.
"It's not over yet," Durant warned.
