LITHUANIA (Lietuvos Krepšinio Lyga) – Talented 17-year-old centre Jonas Valanciunas marked his Lietuvos Rytas debut in impressive fashion by scoring a team-high 18 points to help the defending champions upend Techasas Panevezys 100-66 in Vilnius at the weekend.
The result was made all the more special for Rimas Kurtinaitis’s side as it saw the return of Kenan Bajramovic, who last played for the club in 2007-08. He finished the game with 10 points as they improved to 12-1.
Meanwhile, Siauliai moved to the top of the LKL standings thanks to an 84-74 home win over fourth place Juventus Utena. Deivydas Gailius had a game-high 21 points in the winning cause and former Siauliai player Darius Pakamanis collected 19 for the visitors.
Siauliai have played two more games than Zalgiris and Lietuvos Rytas and the uneven schedule has given them a rare chance to sit atop the two Lithuanian basketball giants in the standings.
Zalgiris Kaunas narrowly escaped its first league defeat of season after erasing a double-digit deficit to edge out minnows Sakalai 86-84.
Playing without Marcus Brown, Dainius Salenga, Mirza Begic and Travis Watson, the Euroleague club made a strong rally in the final period to improve to 12-0. Tadas Klimavicius had 23 points and Martynas Pocius made six free-throws down the stretch to seal the outcome of the game.
