Can Angola rewrite history against Mozambique in the Women's AfroBasket qualifiers?

LUANDA (Angola) - Angola and Mozambique will battle it out in the FIBA Women's AfroBasket Zone 6 Qualifiers.

The two countries have competed fiercely over the years.

FIBA.basketball looks back at the past encounters and results between the two southern African nations.

In eight Women's AfroBasket encounters, Angola have been dominant, winning five of them.

One of those encounters was the 2013 Women's AfroBasket Final in Maputo, Mozambique, which went into overtime. Angola triumphed 64-61 over the hosts to claim their second Women's AfroBasket title.

Between then and the 2013 final, the two countries shared a victory, with Angola winning 73-66 in their group match at the 2003 AfroBasket, and Mozambique getting one back in the group stage of the 2005 edition.

The last time the two countries met in the group stage was in 2021, when Angola won 70-61 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The biggest margin of victory was a 32-point win for Angola (68-36) in the 2009 Women's AfroBasket quarter-finals.

Mozambique won their quarter-final clash in 2017 (61-47). The two have met twice (2000 and 2007) for third place, with Angola taking bronze on both occasions.

More recently (2023), Mozambique have dominated Angola, beating them three times in the Women's AfroBasket Zone 6 qualifiers to secure their place in the main tournament.

Going into the qualifiers in Luanda on Monday and Tuesday (3-4 February), history favours Mozambique, but Angola have a chance to rewrite the script. With home advantage, they have everything to play for.
