Oral Roberts’ head women’s basketball coach Jerry Finkbeiner announced the signing of England’s Cristal Turner to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles in 2008. Turner is the third Great Britain native to sign with ORU this spring.
Turner joins the Golden Eagles from Maidstone, United Kingdom.
“Cristal has been on our radar for a long time,” Finkbeiner said. “We had a scholarship open up due to a medical hardship, gave Cristal a call and sealed the deal.
The 6-2 forward will be no stranger to two of her teammates ? Dominique Allen and Georgia Jones. The three athletes played together on England’s Under-18 2007 European Championship team and this summer will play on the England’s Under-20 team with Allen.
“Along with Dominique and Georgia, Cristal has aspirations to play in the 2012 Olympics,” Finkbeiner continued. “She wants to better herself as a player and develop her game in the next four years here at ORU.”
Turner, who plays for the Sevenoaks Suns, was named the England Basketball League’s Division II South Player of the Year this past season and helped the Suns to ’06-07 and ’07-08 National Trophy wins.
Turner’s stats include 20 points per contest, eight rebounds and four blocks per game and comes from a blood line that is rich in athleticism. Turner’s mother played basketball in the 1988 Olympics and is recognized as one of the top European basketball players in the last 50 years, while her father is a highly-touted referee for FIBA (International Basketball Federation) and ref’d the 1980 Olympic basketball finals in Moscow.
“Cristal had numerous basketball and academic scholarship opportunities around the world and we are thrilled that she will be a Golden Eagle for the next four years,” Finkbeiner said.
Turner, who plans to major in international business, joins junior college transfer Amy Pryor, incoming freshmen Jordan Pyle, Allen and Jones who signed with the Golden Eagles earlier this spring.
