MIES - In order to fulfill FIBA’s wish to invest in the Mini Basketball movement, in 2018, the IBF launched a worldwide initiative to give a new momentum to Mini Basketball.

By promoting and stimulating playful grassroots basketball for 5-12-year-olds girls and boys, the foundation is hoping to attract children to our sport and grow the basketball community.

In our first global tour, a Mini Basketball Convention was held in each continent, each time with the help of the Regional Offices and a hosting National Federation. The first hosts of the conventions in all 5 continents were Portugal, Australia, Morocco, Sri Lanka and Mexico.

Over 5500 children and 780 delegates from 100 National Federations reaped the rewards of the first global movement:

Throughout the conventions, the international delegates were given innovative tools and concepts to further encourage the organization of Mini Basketball events and spread fun, game based learning.

FIBA President Horacio Muratore has high hopes for the Mini Basketball movement and stated, “the age category of 5 – 12 years old is our future, the events main goal is to make lifelong friends of our sport.”

Conventions on each continent will take place again this year with Africa being the first host with the convention taking place from 11 to 13 April in Namibia and Europe being the second with Switzerland hosting the convention from 31 Mai to 2 June.
