GOLD COAST (Australia) - An important FIBA delegation made the most of its time at the SportAccord Convention 2019 which took place from Sunday to Friday (May 5-10) at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition in the Australian state of Queensland.
FIBA President Horacio Muratore headed the group of high-ranking officials from world basketball's governing body that actively took part in the 17th edition of the world sport and business summit. He was joined by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, FIBA first Vice-President and FIBA Africa President Hamane Niang and FIBA Treasurer Ingo Weiss.

FIBA used its booth to promote the much-anticipated and fast-approaching FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, set to take place from August 31-September 15. The biggest edition of basketball's top competition will be played in China for the first time ever, where a record 32 teams will compete in a 16-day basketball showpiece that is the culmination point of a first-of-its-kind 16-month qualification period (November 2017-February 2019).
The week also served as an opportunity for International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach to officially welcome Mr Zagklis - who was appointed FIBA Secretary General last December - during a meeting between the IOC and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF).

The annual gathering of representatives from more than 100 international sports federations drew to a close on Friday, with the General Assembly of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).
Time was taken to pay tribute to Patrick Baumann, former FIBA Secretary General and GAISF President, who passed away last October.

Mr Zagklis gave a speech on the topic of 'Sport Events: third party organizers and the need for a framework'.
The next SportAccord Convention will take place in the Chinese capital of Beijing from April 19-24, 2020.
