    UNITED STATES

    FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
    SUMMER 2006

    TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Very talented, athletic collection of the NBA's best American players. Their game is a blend of
individual talent and tendencies in a team setting. Their overall game was not up to par in this
tournament lacking chemistry and cohesiveness. Good understanding where the ball needs to go on
offense build around #6, #9, and #15. Transition is their first offensive priority. Can score very quickly
off missed shots or turnovers. Best chance against this team is to get them in a half court game and
make them shoot jump shots over the defense. In the half court, there is a mixture between
individual play and organized offense. Penetration is a big part of their offense as well as strong post
play. At their best when crashing the offensive boards. Defensively, they use their physical ability and
their athleticism. All shots are challenged at the rim by #11, #12, and #14. Pressure on the wings to
force turnovers and run outs. Overall, this team will benefit from more practice and game time as a
    unit.

    OFFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
They have the ability to score in every way possible. Weakness is perimeter shooting. Penetrate and
slash to the basket at every opportunity. Three best offensive threats are perimeter players. Posts
take up space, are physical and get angles to the basket. Run hard in transition to score at any
opportunity. Run sets only to get organized and create specificed shots or isolations. Will clear the
side for one-on-one situations often. The missed shot is a golden opportunity for this team to
    rebound it and score.

    TRANSITION
Main ball handlers are point guards #10, #5, as well as #9, and #15. Push it hard until defense
commits to the ball. Post run the floor and will score easy baskets. Shoot the three off transition at
any time, but also like to penetrate and challenge the defense.

    OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
Isolations, set plays, one-on-one, and on ball screening comprise their half court game.

    ON BALL SCREENING
A good share of their offense begins with some type of on ball screen. Several players will shoot over
the on ball screen or use it to turn the corner to get to the rim.

    SET PLAYS
Set plays are geared to locations on the floor and specific players in those places. Use of screens,
on ball screens, and isolations are used in their set plays.
    1. “Elbow”--Enter to #6 at elbow, on ball screen set by opposite elbow to open side. Drives to rim.

    ZONE OFFENSE
Zone offense was the weakest attack this team has. Based on some ball and player movement as
well as skip passes. Look to play until the zone can be exposed by dribble pentration or open shots.
Again, the miss is when they are at their best.

    DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
Geared to use size, athleticism, and physical ability on defense. Will pound you in the post, defend
the perimeter physically, and defend the goal well. Gamble in passing lanes to steal and score at
times. Average, not great, defensive rebounding team. Showed man to man primarily.
