GRAN CANARIA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - After having being a part of the frenzied atmosphere at EuroBasket 2013, the Road Show 2014 returned to Spain and visited Gran Canaria, one of the six host cities of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The island hosted the Road Show truck for 10 days (4-13 October) and there was no shortage of of activities available for the fans.
Spanish basketball legends Jorge Garbajosa and Fernando Romay were on hand to give basketball lessons to visitors.
Garbajosa, a former FIBA World Champion and NBA player with Toronto Raptors, showed off his shooting and passing skills with kids. Romay, a silver medallist at the 1984 Olympics, displayed his amazing strength and sense of humor with fans of all ages.
Outside the truck, two basketball courts were used by on-lookers who came by and played for the fun of it. Inside the truck, an impressive display of items caught the eyes of fans, including: an original size 59 Dikembe Mutombo shoe; a jersey worn by Greek star and FIBA Hall of Fame inductee Nikos Galis, the top scorer at the 1986 FIBA World Championship; the original Naismith Trophy which the world champions get to hold up in celebration of their triumph; a Spalding rules book from 1930-31; and original gold, silver and bronze medals.
The truck made its way around the island, making stops in San Mateo, Moya and San Bartolome de Tirajana, little towns of Gran Canaria which have a perfect combination of basketball and beach to offer.
In coming weeks, the Road Show 2014 will continue its tour of the cities hosting the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The next stop will be Bilbao (8-10 November).
