Aligning with FIBA’s Strategic Objective to Develop Youth Basketball, the Youth Leaders Program will support the development of youth basketball leaders across the region.
Last held as a camp in 2016, the FIBA Youth Leader Program will this year consist of four online workshops in September, followed by a three-day intensive workshop in New Zealand with guest facilitators lined up to share their insight and provide valuable mentorship. Sarah Cowley, Inoke Niubalavu, Byron Vaetoe, and Annie La Fleur will lead the intensive workshops in Auckland from October 20 to 22.
Former New Zealand Track and Field Olympian, Sarah Cowley said that she is eager to be involved with the program and is looking forward to seeing how the youth leaders can impact their communities.
“The key messages for the workshop are about empowering the Youth Leaders not only to continue their own personal development but to take back what they learn to enrich their own federation community,” Cowley said. “It's always about the collective but it's great to be able to support the individual first.
“Oceania is perfectly placed to grow more leaders to contribute to the growth of basketball and sport. Our Oceania brothers and sisters are grounded in service, so it makes sense for our youth leaders to be developed to best be able to do this. The evolution is about growing confidence and leadership capability.”
FIBA Executive Director – Oceania, Amanda Jenkins, added that the program assists with forming the foundations to further empower national federations as they strive for basketball growth and sustainability on and off the court.
“We are really excited to once again be hosting a Youth Leaders Program in Oceania as it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of basketball leaders across Oceania,” Jenkins said. “With the FIBA Oceania Under 17 Youth Championships just around the corner, the timing of this program highlights the role we have to provide opportunities for youth in the region to participate in basketball competitively and administratively.”
Across the program, participants will cover a variety of topics including personal development, communication skills, teamwork, goal setting, diversity and inclusion, ethical leadership, and community engagement.
