    FIBA Oceania September Board Meeting

    SYDNEY (Australia) – The FIBA Oceania Board met at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 for a quarterly update on Zone activities.

    SYDNEY (Australia) – The FIBA Oceania Board met in person for the first time in three years at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 for a quarterly update on Zone activities.

    FIBA President, Hamane Niang and FIBA Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis attended the meeting alongside FIBA Oceania President, Burton Shipley, FIBA Oceania Vice President, David Reid, FIBA Central Board Member, Karo Lelai,  FIBA Executive Director, Amanda Jenkins and FIBA Oceania Board Members, Frank Cruz, Greg Williamson, Hans Tuahivaatetonohiti, Jubilee Kiruu Kuartei, and Thierry Durand.

    FIBA President, Hamane Niang, address the board with opening remarks commending the region on development outcomes, highlighting the significant work being achieved across the Women in Basketball space.  FIBA Oceania President, Burton Shipley, echoed these sentiments, complimenting the region on achieving development and competition success.

    “It is great to finally get everyone together in one room and what a wonderful event to come together for, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup,” Shipley said.  “As a region, across Oceania we are leading the way with women in basketball development and this event is a wonderful opportunity to leverage more activity.

     “Basketball for Good is a great program that is embedded throughout our federations and the last quarter of activity has been incredibly positive.”

    FIBA Executive Director, Amanda Jenkins, provided an update on the regional strategic plan with core objectives being achieved and sustained.

    "Bouncing off the back of the pandemic, National Federations are working hard to capitalize on grassroots development and making sure basketball is reaching all corners of Oceania," Jenkins said.  "As a region we strive to lead the way in development, women in basketball opportunities and we now have an opportunity to focus on sustainable high performance programs through the PacficAus Sports funding."

    The PacificAus Sports funding will provide National Federations in the Pacific with access to strategic high-performance evaluation and planning to create a sustainable pathway for aspiring basketballer in the region

    The Zone Board also discussed FIBA Oceania Competitions, Federation participation in international events including 3x3, youth events and the 2023 Pacific Games.  The Board also highlighted the busy end to the year with the FIBA Melanesian Cup, FIBA Polynesian Cup and FIBA Oceania Under 15 Youth Championships.
