    FIBA Medical Commission makes the most of first meeting of the 2023-2027 work cycle

    MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA Medical Commission has completed a productive first meeting of the new 2023-2027 cycle after convening at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies.

    MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA Medical Commission has completed a productive first meeting of the new 2023-2027 cycle after convening at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies. 

    The Medical Commission is being chaired once more by Dr Peter Harcourt of Australia, with Dr Souheil Sayegh of Switzerland also continuing in the deputy chair role. 

    The main thrust of the meeting centered on strategies to support the health and well-being of players and officials over the next four years, with a particular focus on the education of players and team medical personnel, women's health, mental health, gender eligibility in elite sport, and concussion protocol. 

    Dr Peter Harcourt, Chair of the Commission commented: "FIBA holds the welfare of players and officials as a key priority. The Medical Commission, which is made up of experts with a broad range of skills and representatives of the global basketball community, discussed education opportunities for players, coaches and team medical support."

    He added, "This is building on the work already done by FIBA to ensure the highest standards of support for players and officials." 

    Meanwhile a breakout session of the TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemptions) Committee of the FIBA Medical Commission was also held. 

    The duties of FIBA's Medical Commission are to advise the FIBA Secretary General on:

    The research and practice required to raise the quality of healthcare generally for players The healthcare system available at main official competitions of FIBA in order to ensure that it is capable of delivering care uniformly, effectively and consistently during those competitions How to ensure that the highest quality of sports medicine knowledge is disseminated through the entire sports medicine team associated with the sport of basketball (professionals, coaches, scientists and administrators) through the provision of training, continuing education and other resources Purely medical matters related to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code [/unordered]
