MIAMI (United States) – FIBA in the Americas is excited to announce the expansion of women's basketball with the introduction of the Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA). This newly formed league will play a pivotal role in strengthening FIBA's commitment to women in basketball and propel the sport to new heights in the region.
The Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) will serve as a platform for the development of women's basketball in the Americas and act as a Continental Clubs League exclusively dedicated to the sport. It represents a significant step forward in fostering growth and opportunities for women's basketball across the region.
In conjunction with the Women's South American Club league, the Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) will complement existing initiatives aimed at nurturing and advancing the game for women. Moreover, this league will help create a sustainable ecosystem for women's basketball throughout the Americas.
The inaugural season of the Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) will consist of eight basketball clubs, with four teams representing South America and four teams representing the Central American and Caribbean Region. These teams will be geographically divided into two groups.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the highly anticipated Final 4, which is scheduled to be held on November 3rd and 4th, 2023, bringing together the best teams from the competition for an intense showdown to determine the ultimate champion.
"We are thrilled to introduce the Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) as a pivotal step in expanding women's basketball. By providing a dedicated platform and following the successful competition model, we aim to empower women athletes and foster the growth of the sport across the Americas," said Fabian Borro, FIBA Americas President.
The Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) is set to commence its inaugural season on September 15th, 2023, marking a significant milestone in FIBA's ongoing commitment to women's basketball.
