FIBA Executive Committee convenes in House of Basketball to conclude action-packed year
MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA's Executive Committee has met at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball for its first meeting of the 2023 – 2027 working cycle.
MIES (Switzerland) – FIBA's Executive Committee has met at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball, with the first meeting of the 2023 – 2027 working cycle coinciding with the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024 Draw, also held at FIBA's headquarters.
The following key topics were discussed during the meeting:
FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games
The Executive Committee awarded the National Federations of Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico and Spain the hosting rights of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024, to be played in July next year.
Reports were received on the preparations for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024, to be played in February next year, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Basketball Tournaments, to be held in Lille (Group Phase) and Paris (Final Phase).
FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026
The Executive Committee has approved the proposal from the Competitions Commission to increase the number of teams qualified from the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament to the Women's World Cup Qualifiers from one to two. This format will now include two Pre-Qualifying Tournaments of eight teams, with each tournament qualifying one team.
Youth Events
The Executive Committee received a report on the preparations for both the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024, which is taking place in Turkiye from June 29 to July 7, and the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup 2024, which will be played in Mexico from July 13 to 21.
The Executive Committee has approved the change of event names for Continental youth events across all regions to reflect FIBA's senior Continental events (AfroBasket, AmeriCup, Asia Cup and EuroBasket).

An update was also given on 3x3's National Teams and professional circuit, with a record number of Pro Events being played this year totaling 73, including 23 3x3 Women's Series events. The exponential increase in social media figures continued throughout this season, with a 96% growth on following.
The 3x3 National Teams competition will come to a conclusion in December following the FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup 2023, taking place in Cairo from December 1 to 3, and the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2023 on November 30 to December 3 in San Juan. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final for 2023 will occur on December 8 and 9 in Jeddah.
Club Competitions
Reports were received on FIBA's club competitions, including the Intercontinental Cup, the Road to BAL and the upcoming fourth season of the Basketball Africa League, the current Basketball Champions League, the upcoming Basketball Champions League Americas season, and the West Asia Super League which has just tipped off its second season.
Updates were also given on FIBA's women's club competitions, including the newly created Africa Women's Basketball League (AWBL), which is set to tip off in December, and the Women's Basketball League Americas (WBLA) that saw Colombian team Indeportes Antioquia become the first champions of the competitions earlier this year. Reports were also received on the current EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women seasons.
FIBA PLUS
The Executive Committee approved the revamp of FIBA PLUS based on the success of the previous years. Commencing in 2024, FIBA PLUS will provide four different levels of support to FIBA's National Federation members worldwide. This support will be coordinated between FIBA's Headquarters and the Regional Offices and will be consistent with FIBA's strategic priority of Empowering National Federations.
Her World, Her Rules
A report was given on FIBA's hugely successful Her World, Her Rules program, an initiative that is part of FIBA's strategic priority, Women in Basketball, which is aimed at promoting women's and girls' basketball across the globe through various activities delivered in partnership with National Federations. The Executive Committee has approved the continuation of the program for the next four years.
Other Matters
The Executive Committee has extended the current status quo regarding Russia and Belarus's participation in FIBA Competitions until the next Central Board meeting.
Additionally, the Executive Committee approved the FIBA Consolidated Budget 2024 and Plan 2025-27.
