African basketball family mourns passing of Dr Aboubacar Gueye
ABIDJAN - It's with great sadness that FIBA Africa confirms the passing of Dr Aboubacar Gueye.
ABIDJAN - It's with great sadness that FIBA Africa confirms the passing of Dr Aboubacar Gueye.
Dr. Gueye was until his death chairman of FIBA Africa Medical Committee.
Dr. Gueye died after a battle against an illness, on Sunday, April 30 in Conakry, at the age of 80.
Throughout his life Dr Gueye served basketball at multiple positions.
A former Guinea international player, Dr Gueye was and international referee; basketball coach and a member of the FIBA Medical Commission.
FIBA Africa Secretary General Executive Alphonse Bile paid tribute to Dr Gueye.
In a statement Mr Bile said:
FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave and I are moved by the mourning that strikes our basketball community, following the death of our dear colleague and brother, Dr. Aboubacar Gueye.
FIBA Africa salutes the memory of Dr. Gueye for his significant contribution to the development of basketball in Guinea and Africa.
He was a highly valued member of the basketball family, as much for his enthusiasm, dedication, availability, proven competence and exemplary professional conduct on the court as for his friendliness.
He was a great contributor to FIBA Africa.
Dr. Gueye was an excellent basketball player who featured for Guinea's senior national team from the age of 17 - (1961 to 1975).
From 1983 to 1990, he brilliantly officiated basketball matches on the continent as an international referee.
He later became a Technical Commissioner of FIBA Africa from 1990 to 2010, and President of the Medical Council of FIBA Africa, from 2010 until 2023.
He was also a member of the FIBA World Medical Commission from 2010 to 2019.
The FIBA Africa Central Board proposed to the FIBA Africa Congress - to be held from June 9-10, 2023 in Maputo, Mozambique - the award of the title of honorary member of FIBA Africa to Dr Gueye Aboubacar, for his outstanding service to FIBA Africa over the past 40 years (1983-2023).
In this painful circumstance, FIBA Africa sends to the family of Dr Gueye, to the Guinean Basketball Federation and to the sports movement of Guinea, its deepest compassion, its solidarity and its sincere condolences.
May God grant him salvation and help his family to overcome this difficult time.
