FIBA Africa Board provides guidance for upcoming challenges on the continent

ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire)- The Board of FIBA Africa held its annual meeting on Friday and Saturday (April 5-6) at 'La MAISON du Basketball', its new Headquarters in the Ivorian capital city of Abidjan .

The Board reviewed the activities that took place in 2018 and provided guidance with regards to the challenges of developing the game on the continent as well as the organization of the upcoming General Assembly.

Wide-ranging discussions took place and key decisions were made over the course of the two days.

Competitions

The Board praised the excitement and interest around the FIBA Basketball World Qualifiers and the  Africa Basketball League and recommended that all necessary measures be taken in order to achieve a better coverage of the ABL Final-Four.

Cape Verde and Rwanda confirmed as hosts of FIBA U16 Africa Championships in 2019

The Board confirmed Cape Verde and the East African country Rwanda as the respective hosts of the FIBA U16 Africa Championship and the FIBA U16 Women’s Africa Championship later this year.

Mali confirmed as hosts of the first edition of FIBA AfroCan

With the FIBA AfroBasket taking place every four years, FIBA Africa has launched the AfroCan, a national team competition, which will take place every two years. The Board has confirmed Mali as the host of the inaugural edition.

Madagascar, Nigeria and Tunisia in the bid to host FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup 2019

Three countries including Madagascar, Nigeria and Tunisia have expressed their willingness to host the FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup 2019. The Board will award the host right to one of these candidates at a later stage.

Development and promotion of 3x3

FIBA Africa's National Federations have been encouraged to become more involved in the promotion of 3x3, by signing up and participating in the discipline's planned competitions on the continent in 2019.
The Board has agreed to provided countries with necessary Basketball 3x3 equipment including balls, scoreboards, short clocks as well as backstops.

Support for National Federations Development

The Board:

Invited the Sub-Zones and National Federations to get involved in the distribution of materials and equipment; Instructed the National Federations Commission to help National Federations identify five of their developmental priorities; Urged FIBA Africa's coaches and referees instructors to become more involved in the organization of clinics in their respective National Federations. FIBA Africa General Assembly set to take place in Bamako, Mali

The FIBA Africa General Assembly will take place from June 22 - 23 June 2019, in Bamako, Mali.

The Board announced that applications for the various elective and nominative positions in the FIBA Africa Board will be received at the General Secretariat by Tuesday 23 April 2019.

These positions include:

President of FIBA Africa Treasurer General President of the Council (Competitions and Technique, Development, Communication and Media, Women's Basketball, Youth and 3x3, Medical, Coaches, Mini Basketball and National Federations). [/unordered]

The Election of Zone Presidents

The Board informed all the stakeholders that the applications for the position of Zone President - (Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7) - must be sent by April 23, 2019.
