    FIBA 90th anniversary celebrations have been launched

    MIES (Switzerland) – The year 2022 has a special meaning for the FIBA family. FIBA was founded on 18 June 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland, and this year, we are celebrating our 90th anniversary.

    MIES (Switzerland) – The year 2022 has a special meaning for the FIBA family. FIBA was founded on June 18, 1932 in Geneva, Switzerland, and this year, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. FIBA is proud of the pioneers of basketball who made the courageous move and formed the fundamentals of what is today one of the most powerful sports movements in the world.

    Throughout the year, FIBA will be celebrating its unity, strong commitment to the further development of the sport, its values, achievements, and future. It will be a celebration of the history of FIBA and of each National Federation members, honoring the past and future.

    Different global activities have recently been launched to initiate the celebrations.

    A worldwide photo contest run in parallel to the FIBA Photo Contest, has been created in order to collect pieces of basketball history.

    All 212 National Federations have been asked to send in photos that were taken during the first 20 years of the existence of the Federation, representing a great moment of their history or showing their most recent great basketball success on an international level.

    April 1933. The Madrid and Lisbon teams faced each other in the spectacular bullring of the Spanish capital with 13,000 Spectators.

    All photos will contribute to FIBA’s historic collections and a selection of the best ones will be used in the 90-year exhibition displayed at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball.

    Secondly, FIBA is preparing to set a record for most basketball games played within a 48-hour window.

    On March 19 and 20, 2022, just 90 days before the anniversary of its foundation, FIBA will record the total number of games played at all levels throughout the world. All National Federations will come together to show how large scale and popular basketball is.

    More activities will be launched throughout the year to commemorate this important anniversary.

    All basketball stakeholders around the globe are encouraged to celebrate this historic moment. From elite to grassroots level, FIBA would like people of all ages to unite in its celebrations of this sport.
