Out-of-this-world Butterfield breaks newly-minted Roberson record

NANTERRE (FIBA Europe Cup) - The newly-minted FIBA Europe Cup record for most three-pointers in a game set by John Roberson did not even last a full week before it was one-upped by a phenomenal performance by Nanterre marksman Spencer Butterfield.

The 24-year-old American shooting guard pushed the French club past the Muratbey Usak Sportif hurdle in the Quarter-Finals with a 39-point performance after making a phenomenal 11-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc.

Butterfield made all eight of his three-pointer attempts in the first half and added three more after intermission, helping Nanterre overcome a slender first-leg deficit against the Turkish side to become the first team to progress to the Semi-Finals with a 110-82 triumph at the Palais des Sports Maurice Thorez.

The previous competition best shortly belonged to John Roberson of Elan Chalon, who made 10 triples in the first leg of the Quarter-Final tie against Cibona just six days ago. Before the recent record-breaking frenzy, the record stood in place at eight three-pointers made for almost a year and a half.

It is quite remarkable that Butterfield also tied Roberson's scoring record in the process, finishing the high-paced game with 39 points to his name in just 29 minutes of action, having gone 13-of-19 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

The Nanterre guard is averaging 13.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in the FIBA Europe Cup this season, while shooting three-pointers at an exceptional 43.8% clip, which ranks inside the Top 10 in the competition.
