Day 7: France wins consolation of bronze: Lithuania relegated after loss to Latvia
Sopron (FIBA U18 European Championship 2017) - France received a consolation bronze medal after beating the Czech Republic, while it was heartbreak for a relegated Lithuania who lost to Latvia.
Sopron (FIBA U18 European Championship 2017) - Defending champions France won the consolation prize of bronze after a 55-48 victory over a gallant Czech Republic.
Showcasing their hardnosed defense, France stifled the Czech Republic to jump out to an early lead. However, the Czech Republic fought back in the last quarter but ultimately fell short.
At the other end of the spectrum, Latvia will stay in Division A after a 81-72 victory over Lithuania in Classification 13-14 action. It means Lithuania will be relegated alongside Greece and Turkey. It was a tough and tight contest in the first-half before Latvia took charge in a decisive third quarter. Lithuania fought hard but couldn't get within striking distance.
Hungary ended the tournament on a high and provided plenty of cheer to their fans with a 74-55 thrashing of a disappointing Spain to finish 5th. Hungary dominated from the get go and never let Spain into the contest.
A strong second-half was the key to Slovenia's 70-67 victory over Sweden in Classification 7-8 action. Slovenia withstood a hot performance from Sweden star Klara Lundquist, who scored 34 points.
Croatia finished the tournament superbly beating Italy 71-63 to finish 9th. After starting with four straight losses, Croatia clicked into gear and controlled the tempo against Italy to record their third straight win. It was only Italy's second loss in a solid tournament.
Russia defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 90-73 in Classification 11-12. The game was a see-sawing battle for three quarters before Russia dominated the final term to record a convincing victory and an 11th placed finish.
Turkey won their first game of the tournament with a 71-62 victory over Greece in Classification 15-16. Scores were locked at half-time but Greece took control after that. However, both teams will be relegated to Division B.
