Italy v Latvia
Arturs Kurucs was the leading points scorer for Lativa at last year’s tournament and will be hoping to help his side get off to a winning start against Italy. Both teams failed to reach the last eight stage last year in Kaunas, finishing 10th and 11th respectively with the Italians claiming a 58-49 win when the two met in the first Classification Round.
Greece v Finland
Greece had to fight to retain their Division A status last year, defeating England for 13th place and they open up against Finland in hope of a more fruitful campaign with their next generation stepping up. Finland defeated eventual champions Bosnia & Herzegovina before finishing sixth in what was a remarkable achievement.
Spain v Sweden
An anticipated tough start for a promoted Sweden side as they begin life back in Division A against Spain - who have lost in back-to-back Semi-Finals since last winning the U16 crown in 2013. Carlos Alocen and Joel Parra starred in preparation and have added experience of representing 'La Roja' at the U17 Worlds in Zaragoza.
Serbia v Estonia
Estonia took Gold in Sofia last summer to book their spot in Division A at Under-16 level for the first time and will be keen to stay in the top-flight. Serbia underachieved in eighth last year and have Marko Pecarsky back to lead the front line as they bid to end a nine-year wait to strike gold again at U16 level.
Turkey v Poland
A return to Division A for Poland and they will be hoping the home crowd in Radom can inspire a winning start against Turkey - who claimed bronze 12 months ago - with Aleksandar Balcerowksi a notable absentee for the hosts. Turkey feature two players in Eray Akuyz and Mert Konuk that won bronze last year as well as silver at U17 level, in July.
Lithuania v Bosnia & Herzegovina
A repeat of last year’s final, but not one player from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s winning side returns for the defence of their title. Lithuania have been impressive in the build-up and have Domantas Vilys and Tomas Balciunas to call upon following their bronze winning exploits at the U17 Worlds earlier this summer.
Germany v Croatia
Croatia have not finished in the top five at U16 level since winning the title without defeat in 2011, while Germany are yet to make it past the quarter-finals stage in seven consecutive summers in Division A. It’s a new-look 12 for Croatia with both teams looking to make a winning start.
France v Montenegro
The two teams met in the opening round in 2015 with France topping their group prior to a last eight defeat against Spain. There will be no Sekou Doumbouya in Radom with Joel Ayavi one to watch in France’s 2000-born generation, while Montenegro have imposing bigs Nikola Zizic and Danilo Brnovic at their disposal.
