MUNICH (EuroCup Women) - The match-ups for the EuroCup Women Round of 8 have now been confirmed, following the completion of the Round of 16 on Thursday evening.
Amongst the eight teams to move on are Czech outfit Basketball Nymburk and French club UFAB 49, who both achieved the feat in their maiden season in Europe's second-tier women's club competition.
Basketball Nymburk advanced by winning both their home-and-away fixtures over Orduspor with an aggregate score of 163-153, whilst UFAB 49 advanced in the most dramatic of fashion, needing overtime to gain back their first-leg advantage. They eventually clung on 130-125.
An Istanbul derby provided one of the most exciting Round of 16 encounters with Besiktas sneaking by Istanbul Universitesi 152-148.
It was also tight between Basket Landes and Edirnespor, with the former overturning a seven-point first-leg deficit to prevail 150-148, giving France three teams in the next round.
The third French team, Nantes Reze were relatively untroubled by Enisey, winning 136-121. It was a similar story for Italian team Reyer Venezia, who defeated TTT Riga 136-122.
In the meantime former EuroLeague Women champions from Russia, Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje (defeating DIKE Basketball 143-119), and still undefeated Hungarian club Aluinvent Miskolc (defeating Lulea Basket 176-134), set the benchmark for the Round of 8 with commanding wins.
The Round of 8 match-ups are as follows:
- Besiktas Istanbul v Umana Reyer Venezia
- Basketball Nymburk v Aluinvent DVTK Miskolc
- Nantes Reze v Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje
- UFAB 49 v Basket Landes
The Round of 8 will begin in the final week of January and follow the same format as the Round of 16, with the lower ranked team playing at home first, and the return fixture set for one week later.
The winners, based on aggregate score, advance to the Quarter-Finals, where they will be joined by the four EuroLeague Women teams who finished in 5th and 6th position in the EuroLeague Women Regular Season groups.
